My Adventures in Finding the Perfect Shelves at Hobby Lobby

Turning My Craft Room Into An Organized Oasis

As an avid crafter and hobbyist, I was really excited when my husband and I bought a new house last year that had an extra room I could finally turn into my dream craft studio. I had so many ideas and plans to transform it into a creative oasis, with different stations for all my projects, plenty of storage, and of course, amazing shelves to showcase all my supplies.

But I quickly realized I had no idea where to start when it came to picking out shelves! I wanted something stylish but also functional enough to hold all my scrapbooking papers, fabrics, yarns, paints, and more without breaking the bank. That’s when I decided to head to my favorite craft store, Hobby Lobby, to explore all the shelving options they have to offer.

Over the course of several trips, I tested out their style finder quizzes, browsed the inspiring room vignettes, and studied all the practical factors I needed to consider. It was quite the learning experience as a first-time crafter setting up her own workspace! Join me as I share my adventures in finding the perfect shelves for my craft room makeover at Hobby Lobby.

Evaluating All The Different Types of Shelves

The first thing I discovered at Hobby Lobby is that they offer a huge variety of shelves in just about every style, shape, size and material you can think of! Here’s an overview of all the different types I came across:

Wood shelves are a classic choice with a natural, cozy look. Hobby Lobby has tons of wood shelving units in different stains and finishes, from a dark espresso color to a light natural wood grain. These are perfect for a traditional craft room.

Metal and wire shelves have more of an industrial, modern vibe. I saw lots of steel wire shelving pieces with simple metal frames in black, white, or chrome. These are great for a sleek, clean look.

Floating shelves instantly catch the eye with shelves that seem to magically hover on the wall. Hobby Lobby has floating boards made of wood, glass, or acrylic plastic in fun artistic shapes. These focal point shelves are great for displaying your best projects.

Corner shelves optimize wasted space by fitting into that empty corner nook. I found corner shelves in the standard triangular shape as well as creative curved designs to fit rounded corners. These are perfect for maximizing storage room.

In addition to flat horizontal shelving, there were also ladder-style shelves that add vertical visual interest and cubby shelves with covered storage bins. Tiered shelves take advantage of vertical real estate by stacking shelves closely. For kids’ rooms, Hobby Lobby has colorful themed shelves shaped like houses, cars and animals. The options were simply amazing!

Factoring In Cost, Quality, and Weight Capacity

With so many choices, I really had to evaluate each shelf option in terms of cost, quality, durability, and weight capacity. I knew my supplies would add up quickly, so strength and stability were big factors!

Hobby Lobby’s shelves range from $15 to $250 depending on size, materials, and design. Large fixed shelving units were on the pricier end while wall-mounted floating shelves were cheaper. I loved the look of the glass shelves but was hesitant about their durability and weight capacity compared to wood or metal.

Based on customer reviews, Hobby Lobby’s in-house brands like Simply Tidy and Wall Pops offer decent quality and value, though some had concerns about particle board durability over time. Higher end brands like ClosetMaid were praised for strength, versatility, and holding up well under heavy use.

I also paid attention to the shelf’s weight capacity, which ranged from 10 to 50 pounds per shelf. The heavy duty industrial metal shelves unsurprisingly could hold the most weight – up to 800 pounds total load capacity! For my craft supplies, I knew 30 pounds per shelf would be realistic.

The Great Shelf Material Debate: Wood vs. Metal vs. Acrylic

Beyond just cost and construction, I really struggled choosing a material that would fit the aesthetic I had in mind for my craft room. Here’s an overview of the pros and cons of each shelf material I considered:

Wood shelves have that cozy, rustic charm that looks instantly inviting. Stained wood like espresso reminds me of a comfy cabin library. But light unfinished wood can also give a room an airy, farmhouse vibe. The downsides are wood shows scratches over time and can warp if stored in a humid room.

Metal shelves have an edgy, urban look that’s very on-trend right now. The matte black and chrome options look sleek and modern. However, plain metal also shows fingerprints easily. I’d have to style shelves carefully to avoid an industrial warehouse vibe.

Acrylic shelves add a fun, contemporary twist with lucite plastic instead of traditional materials. The transparent or colored acrylic has a cool, glamorous look. But acrylic can also crack under too much weight and give off cheap vibes if not styled properly.

I went back and forth so many times! Ultimately I decided to go with a mix of wood and metal to get both a cozy and modern vibe. The key is choosing shelf styles and finishes that flow together aesthetically.

Taking Shelving Installation Into Consideration

Once I decided on the perfect shelves, I had to figure out how I was actually going to get them up on the wall! Hobby Lobby does a great job laying out all the installation considerations you need to think through before purchase:

  • Mounted vs. freestanding: Mounted shelves attach right to the wall for a floating look, while freestanding units sit on the floor. I knew I wanted to maximize wall space with mounted shelves.
  • Stud mounting: For sturdy wood shelves, Hobby Lobby recommends screwing into wall studs. This provides the strongest support but means you’re limited by existing stud placement.
  • Drywall anchors: For lighter duty shelves, drywall anchors allow you to hang shelves anywhere without finding studs. But weight capacity is reduced.
  • Pre-assembled vs. DIY: Pre-assembled shelves are ready to mount right out of the box. For most DIY shelves, Hobby Lobby includes all the required hardware and easy instructions.
  • Hanging tools: I’d need a stud finder, level, electric drill, and basic toolbox. Some shelves include wall mounts, while for others I’d have to purchase brackets separately.

Luckily my handy husband agreed to tackle the installation for me! As long as I measured properly and marked all the studs ahead of time, he assured me the process would be pretty straightforward.

Maximizing Space With Corner Shelves and Clever Storage Solutions

One thing I quickly realized is that the shelves themselves, while beautiful, won’t automatically make my craft room feel organized. I needed storage bins, baskets, dividers, and other organizational tools to optimize the space.

Hobby Lobby has a massive selection of storage solutions in every size, shape, color and material. I was drawn to cozy woven baskets to corral all my ribbons, lace, and fabrics. Sleek metallic bins are perfect for storing markers, pens, glue sticks, and other small supplies neatly. For extra mini treasures, I found darling vintage-inspired jars and canisters.

To take advantage of every last bit of space, I went on the hunt for corner shelves. I scored some beautifully rustic wooden corner shelves with extra storage baskets that are perfect for tucking into my two unused corners. For an angled nook, I found these unique rounded floating shelves that can be arranged creatively.

I also picked up a few three-tiered shelving carts on wheels that I can move around. These will let me take supplies to wherever my project mess inevitably travels! A ladder shelf next to my worktable provides vertical storage for things I constantly need within arm’s reach like my favorite craft paints.

Curating My Dream Shelves to Showcase My Supplies and Projects

With my shelves assembled and storage solutions in place, the final step was the fun part – curating! I wanted to artfully arrange my supplies to make the most of my beautiful new shelves.

I designated one wall for fabric and yarn, rolling and organizing my materials by color on matching woven baskets for a visually pleasing effect. Across from that, my scrapbooking paper is fanned out attractively in rainbow order.

On my big statement ladder shelf, I lined up all my acrylic craft paints by color and placed cute mini paint brushes in glass jars at each end. Above my computer desk, I installed some small floating shelves to display some quick inspirational phrases and favorite finished projects.

Over my work table, I hung some industrial metal shelves with baskets to stash all my most-used tools and supplies for easy grabbing. The neutral metal tone complements the rest of my decor. Everywhere you look, there are pretty vignettes of my passions!

Enjoying the Fruits of My Organizational Labors

It was quite the journey figuring out the shelves and storage solutions for my ultimate craft room. But now that it’s finally finished, I’m thrilled with how my organizational labors turned this space into a stunning showcase of my hobbies and creativity.

Whenever I walk into my studio, I’m filled with inspiration eager to start my next project. Everything has a place, so I don’t lose any time hunting down supplies. I can pull out yarn or scrapbook paper and immediately envision what I’ll make with it.

My shelves from Hobby Lobby were definitely the foundational piece that allowed me to build my dream workspace. The quality has held up wonderfully to the constant rearranging and I love how well they showcase my collection. When friends come over, they always compliment how pulled together and personalized it looks.

If you’re looking to organize your own hobby room, I highly recommend perusing the options at your local Hobby Lobby. Make sure to evaluate your space, storage needs, and style preferences closely to choose the perfect shelves. It makes such a difference having carefully curated and functional storage solutions! The right shelves can take your hobby space from messy to masterpiece.
