My Adventure at the Hickory Hobby Lobby

Exploring the Arts and Crafts Wonderland in Hickory

As an avid crafter and hobbyist, I’m always seeking out new arts and crafts stores to spark my creativity and stock up on supplies. So when I heard about a Hobby Lobby location opening up in Hickory, North Carolina, I knew I had to check it out!

The Hobby Lobby store in Hickory is located at 1890 Highway 70 SE, nestled in a shopping plaza with other big box stores like Walmart, Ross Dress for Less, and Michaels. With over 55,000 square feet of retail space, it’s one of Hobby Lobby’s trademark massive shops, boasting endless rows of everything your artsy heart desires.

Since I live about 30 minutes away in the next town over, I planned a special hobby-filled day trip to explore the new Hobby Lobby location. My crafting adventures in Hickory started when I arrived right as the store opened at 9AM on a Wednesday morning. I’ve found that for big box craft stores, it’s best to go early in the morning on a weekday, so you can take your time browsing before it gets crowded.

Stepping through the automatic doors, I grabbed one of the big red shopping carts, anticipating I’d be picking up a lot of goodies! The store layout is bright and spacious, with towering ceilings and wide aisles to accommodate all those giant carts. Unlike other craft stores, Hobby Lobby has a fairly unique setup with departments loosely clustered by craft category rather than precise aisles.

The first section I wandered through contained ribbons, fabric, yarn, and other sewing and quilting materials. As an avid sewer, I was drooling over the bolts of printed cotton fabric and all the notions. I could have spent hours just in this section alone picking out materials for my next project. But I pressed on, knowing there was much more crafting bounty to behold.

Towards the back of the store, I discovered the papercrafting section – otherwise known as heaven for us cardmaking fanatics! Shelves were stuffed to the brim with every kind of patterned paper pack, die cut embellishment, stamp set, ink and tool you could imagine. I loaded up on some new cardstock and got lost in thought planning my next handmade card creation.

No hobby store trip is complete without checking out the seasonal and holiday offerings. Even though it wasn’t even fall yet, Hobby Lobby had their Christmas section in full swing, with rows of faux trees, ornaments, and enough Christmas villagebuildings and figurines to fill the North Pole! As I eyed a charming gingerbread house decoration, I made a mental note to come back later in the season when I start decorating.

In the mood to treat myself, I headed over to the art supply area to browse. As an art journaler, I was thrilled to find a huge selection of gel pens, brush markers, pastels and colored pencils to feed my painting and drawing habits. I also picked up some cute washi tape, enamel pins, and novelty erasers just for fun – those kinds of kawaii supplies always inspire me to get creative!

My inner yogi drew me to the wall art and home decor section next. I’ve been wanting to liven up my meditation space with some inspirational wall hangings and decor. Hobby Lobby delivered with a massive selection of framed prints, canvas art, mirrors, candles, and knickknacks for every room. I settled on a carved wood plaque with the ohm symbol to adorn my zen zone.

By now, my cart was getting pretty full, so I decided to head over to the floral department for the finishing touch. I love working dried and faux flowers into my papercrafting and home projects. Hobby Lobby has flowers in every color, shape, size and style imaginable. I hand-picked an array of hydrangeas, pampas grass stems, and cherry blossom sprigs to complete my haul.

My craft shopping extravaganza at the new Hickory Hobby Lobby was such a treat, I didn’t want it to end! But the growling in my stomach reminded me I had been here for over 2 hours. So I headed to the registers to check out with my cartful of crafting treasures.

The checkout process was smooth and quick thanks to multiple registers and self-checkout lanes. I saved even more money by using the Hobby Lobby app and coupons on several items. The friendly cashier neatly packed my bags so nothing would get crushed or damaged on the drive home.

Needless to say, my first trip to the Hobby Lobby in Hickory, NC was a huge success! As I packed up my car, I saw families heading into the store for some crafty family fun. The parking lot had filled up with cars, indicating this new Hobby Lobby location is already a popular destination in Hickory for arts and crafts supplies.
